I'm Er Rin, the baker at Amour Desserts. Every year a good number of our Canberra orders come from students and people posted here for work — first Mid-Autumn away from family, wanting the mooncakes they actually grew up eating rather than a supermarket tin.

That's the whole reason I started making these. Handmade to order in our Melbourne kitchen, no preservatives, less sugar than the commercial boxes.

Mooncake Delivery in Canberra: Capital Celebrations

Canberra is a city people arrive in rather than come from. Students, public servants, diplomatic postings — and a lot of our orders here are somebody's first Mid-Autumn away from their family.

You can see it in the orders themselves. Smaller boxes, more single orders, and more messages asking what to choose if you've never had to buy mooncakes before, because at home somebody else always did it.

It's also the quickest run we have. One to two business days from Melbourne, and all that green space means there's usually somewhere nearby to sit outside with them.

Canberra's Mooncake Favorites

Canberra orders traditional lotus paste with single yolk first, then Shanghai-style with lotus paste, then Taiwanese 3Q, then assorted boxes.

Single yolk ahead of double is the tell, at least as I read it. Double yolk is what people send as a gift; single yolk is what most of us actually grew up eating at home. Canberra is mostly buying for itself.

Classic Traditional Mooncakes for Canberra Delivery

Single yolk lotus is Canberra's most-ordered, and it's the one I'd hand someone who's homesick. Our lotus paste is cooked down slowly and kept restrained — sweet, but not the sugar hit of a supermarket box.

Shanghai Mooncakes — Shortcrust, Not Baked Skin

Buttery and crumbly, filled with lotus paste or red bean paste. Good with tea, and good for sharing with housemates who've never had a mooncake before.

Salted Egg Yolk Pastry Mooncakes

Flaky spiral pastry around a whole salted yolk, lotus paste or red bean inside. Rich and slightly grainy against the sweet paste — golden, never chalky.

Taiwanese 3Q Mooncakes

Red bean paste with pork floss — sweet, salty, chewy. Popular with our Canberra students, usually ordered by the box rather than singly.

Nyonya Sambal Mooncake

Sambal with salted egg yolk — savoury, gently spicy, and completely Malaysian. Nyonya cooking has always put sweet beside heat; this tastes like the kuih stalls in Melaka.

Mid-Autumn is a sharing festival. One mooncake, cut into small wedges, passed around — that's how I remember it from my grandmother's table in Malaysia.
