Mooncake Delivery in Darwin: Tropical Territory Celebrations

Darwin sitting closer to Kuala Lumpur than to Melbourne is a geographic fact, but it shows up in the orders too. This is the one city where I've never had to explain what sambal is doing inside a mooncake.

The Chinese and Southeast Asian communities up there go back generations and keep the festival properly. The difficulty was never interest, it's the trip. Four to five days north, through heat, with nothing in the box to preserve it.

So Territory orders leave early and go out packed for the weather. When yours lands, keep it somewhere cool.

Single yolk and mixed nuts at the top is an old-school pairing, the two that were standard before the range widened out. The less-sweet recipe earns its keep here for the same reason it does in Queensland: in that heat, a sugary mooncake is hard going after the first slice.

Nyonya Sambal Mooncake: Closest to Home

Sambal and salted egg yolk in a mooncake. Savoury, gently spicy, and completely Nyonya, sweet sitting next to heat, the way the kuih stalls in Melaka do it.
