I'm Er Rin, the baker at Amour Desserts. Hobart is the only city we post to across water — and, which surprises people, it's the kindest climate we send to. Our mooncakes have no preservatives, so a cool Tasmanian spring treats them far better than a Darwin one does.

The trip is the longer part. Order by the 6 September postage cutoff and your box crosses Bass Strait with time to spare.

Mooncake Delivery in Hobart: Island Traditions

Tasmania's Chinese and Southeast Asian community is the smallest we post to, and that changes the shape of the orders rather than just the number of them. Fewer boxes, but more of them shared — a lot of what we send south is one box doing the work of three.

Most orders come from around the university and from people who moved down for work. If you're the only person on your street eating mooncake this September, you're in ordinary company here.

Everything crosses Bass Strait by express, which adds a day over the mainland runs and nothing else.

Hobart orders traditional lotus paste with double yolk first, then Shanghai-style, then traditional mixed nuts, then assorted boxes for sharing.

Classic Traditional Mooncakes for Hobart Delivery

Double yolk lotus is what Hobart orders most, with mixed nuts close behind — the two flavours people reach for when they want the mooncake they remember rather than someone's reinvention of it.

Our lotus paste is cooked down slowly and kept less sweet than the tinned imports. Alongside it: red bean, pineapple lotus, double yolk, and mixed nuts — which Tasmania orders a bigger share of than any mainland city we post to.

Shanghai Mooncakes — Buttery Shortcrust

A shortcrust shell instead of a baked skin, filled with lotus paste or red bean paste. Crumbly and buttery, and sturdy in the box — which counts for something when it's going across the strait.

Hobart's second most-ordered, and the one I'd hand someone who has never had a mooncake and thinks they won't like one.

Salted Egg Yolk Pastry Mooncakes

Flaky spiral pastry wrapped around a whole salted yolk, with lotus paste or red bean inside. The yolk should be rich and a little grainy against the sweet paste — golden, never chalky.

These are the ones that get cut open first so everyone can see the yolk.

Taiwanese 3Q Mooncakes

Red bean paste with pork floss — sweet, salty and chewy at once.

If there's a UTAS student in the house who grew up in Taipei or KL, put one of these in the box. It's the flavour that gets the biggest reaction from people a long way from home.

Nyonya Sambal Mooncake

Sambal with salted egg yolk, inside a mooncake. Savoury, gently spicy, and completely Nyonya — that cooking has always set sweet beside heat, and this one tastes like the kuih stalls in Melaka rather than anything from a dessert counter.

Every mooncake is baked after you order — no preservatives, less sugar than the commercial boxes, packed for the crossing.

Hobart's Chinese and Southeast Asian community is small enough that most of the boxes we send there get shared rather than kept. If that's your table, the assorted box saves the argument — everyone gets a different one and nobody has to commit.
